The ChatGPT Prompt That Fixes Your Broken Spreadsheet Formulas
Stop describing your formula problem in prose. Paste the layout, the formula, and the wrong output, and the fix arrives in one turn.
The reason most spreadsheet-help requests fail in a chatbot is that people describe the problem in words. Words are lossy. The fix that works takes thirty seconds longer to prepare and gets the right answer on the first or second turn instead of the sixth.
The paste pattern: three things, labeled. (1) A tiny sample of your actual data, five rows, with the column letters in the first row. (2) The formula that is misbehaving, copied from the formula bar, not retyped. (3) What it currently outputs and what it should output, for one specific row. That third line is the one people skip, and it is the line that turns guessing into debugging.
With those three pieces, ask for the corrected formula plus one sentence on why the old one was wrong. The why matters: half the time my formula errors are a misunderstanding I would repeat tomorrow, and 'the range was offset by one because your headers are in row 1 but your data starts in row 2' is the lesson, not just the patch.
Two upgrades that made this routine much stronger. First, tell it which spreadsheet you are using; Excel and Google Sheets disagree about enough syntax that unprompted cross-compatibility is a real failure mode. Second, for anything with dates, paste the dates exactly as they appear in the sheet, including the locale format, because date parsing is where most 'the formula is right but the answer is wrong' mysteries live.
The habit generalizes: chatbots are bad at imagining your spreadsheet and good at reasoning about it. Stop making them imagine it. Thirty seconds of pasting beats ten minutes of 'it depends,' and unlike the described version, the pasted version of your problem is the one that actually exists.
