Use AI for the Task You Hate Most, Not the One That Impresses People

Everyone points AI at the flashy work. The relief shows up when you point it at the chore you've been avoiding for weeks.

The instinct with a new AI tool is to aim it at something impressive: a polished video, a clever agent, a viral post. Those are fun and they show well. They are also not why the tool will change your week.

The real unlock is the task you dread. For me it was sorting a messy inbox of 400 unread and a folder of receipts I'd ignored for a quarter. Boring, low-status, and exactly where AI shines because it doesn't get tired of repetition.

I pointed a simple pipeline at the receipts: extract the date, vendor, amount, and category, drop it in a sheet. Twenty minutes of setup replaced an afternoon I'd been avoiding for months. The flashy demo would have impressed nobody; this one paid a real bill.

The pattern holds. The tasks that drain you are usually the repetitive, rules-based ones, which are precisely what these tools handle. The impressive creative stuff is nice, but it rarely clears a backlog.

Make a list of the chores you avoid. Pick the ugliest one. That's your first AI project, not the demo reel.
