This Week in AI: Agents Left the Lab

Agents stopped being a demo this week. OpenAI's Dots, the always-on agents built on GPT-6 Astra, reached Pro users outside the EEA, Switzerland and UK, running on dedicated cloud PCs with access to more than 4,000 plugins and the ability to keep working between conversations. Google answered at its Gemini at Work event on October 8 with a single universal Gemini agent for Gmail, Docs and Sheets that carries persistent memory and multi-agent orchestration, and reported nearly 90 percent of the Fortune 100 now use Gemini Enterprise.

Microsoft introduced Autopilot, a 'digital coworker' with its own identity and configurable permissions, plus natural-language app building inside Copilot. The consumer side got louder too: Meta's Muse picked up a Shopify integration for product search and purchasing, and Grok Bot connected to Shopify to check orders and update listings. Shopify's WebMCP support means browser-based agents can now read, modify and submit checkouts across merchant sites, which is agent-to-agent commerce becoming real.

The tools also moved into your files. Anthropic shipped a Claude sidebar for Google Docs, Sheets and Slides in public beta on October 6, letting any paid subscriber edit live Google files. DeepSeek opened its Harness desktop agent for macOS and Windows with local file access and a plugin manager, and Manus launched 2.0 with a Cloud Computer for persistent project hosting.

The pattern is consistent: agents are no longer things you prompt, they're things that sit in your apps, your calendar and your storefront. That's useful and a little unnerving, because the line between 'helps me' and 'acts for me' just got thinner.

For builders, the lesson is to put a cap, a log and a human checkpoint on anything autonomous. Faster work and faster mistakes look identical until something breaks.
