The Dead Zone Where AI Assistants Fail
They're great at the start and okay at the end, but the messy middle is where assistants go quiet.
AI assistants shine at the bookend tasks: draft the first version, summarize the final one. The dead zone is the middle, where the work is ambiguous, the requirements are half-formed, and you need someone to sit in the uncertainty with you instead of resolving it prematurely.
That's exactly where most real work lives. A project isn't 'write the doc' and 'summarize the doc.' It's the three days of not-knowing what the doc should even say. Assistants hate that state; they rush to a confident answer to escape it, and the answer is usually wrong-shaped.
I've learned to use the assistant for the parts with a clear shape and to protect the shapeless middle for myself. When I cave and ask the model to 'just figure it out,' I get a plausible structure that commits me to the wrong frame before I've thought.
The fix isn't a better prompt, it's a better boundary. Let the tool do the defined work, and guard the undefined work as the only part that's actually yours. The dead zone is where your judgment earns its keep.
