I Dictate First Drafts to ChatGPT While Walking the Dog
Voice mode turns a dog walk into a drafting session. The trick is to talk messy on purpose and fix later.
I used to lose my best ideas to the gap between the walk and the laptop. ChatGPT's voice mode closed it. I talk the draft out loud, it transcribes and reflects, and by the time I'm home I have a messy but real first version instead of a blank page.
The method that works: I don't try to dictate a finished paragraph. I describe the point I'm trying to make, argue with myself a little, and ask it to summarize what I actually said. Half the time I discover the idea was thinner than I thought, which is useful before I write 800 words on it.
Where it breaks is when I treat the transcript as final. It isn't. Voice drafts are full of 'you know' and loops. I paste the summary into a real editor and cut 40% on the first pass. The walk gives me structure; the desk gives me the sentences.
If you write for a living and hate the opening blank, try one voice draft a day for a week. Not to publish, just to start. The friction it removes is the part where you stare at the cursor.
