Luma Ray or Dream Machine? I Picked by the Shot, Not the Hype

Two Luma modes, two jobs. One is for camera moves, the other for turning a still into motion.

Luma gives you Ray and Dream Machine and the marketing makes them sound like the same thing with different logos. They aren't. Ray is built for camera motion on an existing image, pushing in or orbiting a scene you already have. Dream Machine is built for bringing a still to life with movement and is looser about physics.

I use Ray when the composition is already perfect and I just want it to move like a shot. Product hero, architecture, a portrait that should slowly breathe. I use Dream Machine when I have one image and want the world around it to animate, accepting that it'll take liberties.

The mistake is using Dream Machine for a precise camera push. It wanders. And using Ray for 'make this photo dance' undersells it. Match the mode to the intent and your hit rate climbs without changing your prompts much.

If you only generate occasionally, try Ray for anything static-to-moving and Dream for anything you want to feel alive. The names are confusing on purpose. The use cases aren't.
