The browser is becoming the chatbot, and my tab count finally went down

Every browser now has an AI in the sidebar. I fought it for a month, then noticed my twelve open tabs of comparison shopping had become one conversation.

I resented the browser AI sidebar for a year. Another assistant bolted onto software that worked, another icon, another prompt box begging for attention. Then last week I comparison-shopped a washing machine the old way — twelve tabs, a notes doc, a headache — caught myself, and did it again in the sidebar. The tabs stayed closed. That was the moment.

What changed isn't the intelligence; chatbots have been smart for a while. It's placement. The sidebar model can see the page you're on, so the friction of 'explain this spec sheet' went from copy-paste-and-switch to a question typed where the spec sheet lives. Compare three products, ask what 'inverter motor' means, check whether the review site's complaint matters — all without leaving the page being interrogated.

The tab count is the tell. My twelve-tab shopping sessions were actually a manual memory system: every open tab was a fact I was afraid of losing. The sidebar conversation holds the state instead — 'so far we've established B is quieter but C has a longer warranty' — and my working memory stopped being the database. I closed nine tabs mid-research and didn't lose the thread. That's new.

The limits showed up the moment I left the readable web. A banking portal with a maze of session pages confused it. A checkout flow it offered to complete — I let it fill the form but not click buy, and I'd advise exactly that line for everyone. And on one news site it summarized the article while missing that the article was itself about AI research, citing the numbers wrong. Sidebar AI inherits sidebar attention: it's focused, not deep.

The trend is settled regardless of my tab habits — every major browser has one now, and the page-aware chat is simply better for half of what I used tabs for. The other half, the deep reading and the actual purchases, still deserves a human with a closed sidebar. But twelve tabs of comparison shopping? That era's over, and my RAM thanks everyone involved.

Updated October 28, 2026: the sidebar pattern below has spread to every major browser since.

Frequently asked questions:

Q: What makes browser AI sidebars useful?

A: Placement. The sidebar can see the page you're on, so 'explain this spec sheet' goes from copy-paste-and-switch to a question typed where the spec sheet lives.

Q: How do you know the shift is real?

A: Tab count. Twelve open tabs were a manual memory system - every tab a fact you feared losing. The sidebar conversation holds that state instead.

Q: What are the limits?

A: The sidebar answers the page it sees. Comparison across many sources, and anything requiring your accounts, still works better with a dedicated agent.
