Cursor vs GitHub Copilot vs Windsurf: I Used All Three IDEs for a Month

I kept three editors open on three machines for a month because I was tired of picking a side before I understood the differences. Cursor, GitHub Copilot, and Windsurf all bolt AI into the editor, but they solve different problems and the one that fits you depends on how you work, not on which demo looked best.

Cursor feels like an AI-first editor. It reads across your files, so tab completion actually knows the function two directories over, and the chat edits the real codebase instead of pasting a snippet you re-type. The cost is weight: indexing a big repo is slow, and it can slip a bug past you that you have to catch in review.

GitHub Copilot is the opposite instinct. Its autocomplete is the most mature of the three, and the agent mode drops straight into the GitHub and enterprise workflows teams already run. That integration is the reason it wins in a corporate setting where policy and permissions already live in GitHub. The trade is that it feels less like a partner and more like a very fast typist.

Windsurf is the one I underestimated. Its agent keeps full-project context, makes multi-file edits, and then hands back to you without a fight, which is exactly the loop I want when I'm refactoring. The ecosystem is younger, and agent edits still need a review pass, but the smooth handoff is the feature I kept reaching for.

My honest split: solo builders and people who live in one codebase should start with Cursor or Windsurf. Teams already deep in GitHub, especially enterprises with policies to respect, should take Copilot. None of them replaces reading the diff - they just make writing the diff faster, and that's the whole point.
