OpenAI's $30B Round Says the Model Was Never the Moat
OpenAI is closing a $30 billion round at a $1.25 trillion valuation. Whatever you think of the number, it tells you where the real value sits now, and it is not in the weights.
A model can be copied, outpaced, or open-sourced. A distribution channel, a balance sheet, and a storage layer that serves a billion users at 12x faster reads cannot. That is what the money is really buying.
For smaller builders, the lesson is freeing: you do not need the flagship to win. You need the part of the stack the giants cannot trivially take from you, usually a workflow or a relationship.
I stopped worrying about which model is 'best' a while ago. The round this week is just the market saying the same thing out loud, with a very large number.
