How I Write Podcast Intros That ElevenLabs Can Actually Perform

AI narration fails on punctuation, not words. These five writing rules turned my robotic-sounding intros into ones listeners assume are recorded.

My first ElevenLabs intro sounded like a flight announcement, and the problem was never the voice, it was that I wrote for readers instead of a performer. Five writing rules fixed it, and they take five minutes to apply.

Rule one: write punctuation as performance. A comma is a breath, a period is a full stop, an em dash is a pickup in energy. Rule two: short sentences, always under fifteen words for emphasis lines. Long sentences produce flat AI delivery because the model spreads its attention evenly.

Rule three: spell numbers and abbreviations the way they should sound, write twenty-twenty-six and N-A-S-A. Rule four: use ellipses sparingly and deliberately, one per paragraph maximum, because each one buys a dramatic pause and the currency inflates fast.

Rule five is the one that separates decent from good: mark the one word per sentence that matters by restructuring the sentence so that word lands last. Models handle emphasis through position better than through caps or quotes, which mostly produce weird stress artifacts.

Apply all five to a ninety-second intro, generate two or three takes with stability slightly below default, and pick the take whose mistakes you can fix by editing one word. My listener surveys cannot tell it is synthetic, and the update workflow, edit text, regenerate one paragraph, means my intro changes weekly instead of annually like a real recording.
