How I Turn Lecture Recordings Into Study Notes With NotebookLM (And Actually Retain Them)

Three hours of lecture audio is not study material, it is a haystack. Upload, summarize, interrogate, and generate, the four-pass NotebookLM routine that turned my pile into notes.

Listening back to a three-hour lecture recording is technically studying and practically procrastination with extra steps. What you need is the structure inside it, and NotebookLM extracts that structure remarkably well because it works only from your sources. My routine has four passes, and the whole thing takes under forty minutes per lecture, with the retention dividends lasting the semester.

Pass one is the raw upload and the summary. Create a notebook per course, dump in the recordings along with any slides or readings, and generate the built-in summary first. Do not study from it; use it as the map. Seeing the topics the AI identified tells you within a minute whether the upload worked and what the lecture thought it was about, which occasionally differs from what the syllabus says.

Pass two is where the notes actually get made. Ask for a structured breakdown: main claims, supporting examples, definitions given, and any numbers or dates mentioned. The citations are why I trust this over a general chatbot, every claim links to the exact moment in the audio, and spot-checking a claim takes one click instead of scrubbing three hours. Export this into your notes app and reformat in your own structure, because the act of reorganizing is half the learning.

Pass three is interrogation, and it is the pass most people skip. Ask NotebookLM the questions you expect on the exam: compare the two models presented in week four, what did the lecturer say about the exception to this rule, where did the slides and the lecture disagree. The disagreement question is gold, because contradictions between your materials are where exam questions live and where a grounded tool is honest about ambiguity in a way a general chatbot is not.

Pass four is the audio overview, generated at the end, not the beginning. The two-host podcast discussion of the material is genuinely good for consolidation on a commute, but only after you have done the real work, because passive listening first produces the illusion of familiarity. My sequence inverts it deliberately: engage with the material on paper, then let the audio overview cement it. Three lectures a week became notes I actually own, and the Sunday review session shrank from three hours to forty minutes.
