The New Model Drop? It's Faster, Not Smarter

Every release is sold as a leap. A lot of them are speed and price leaps with a modest quality bump, and the marketing doesn't mention which kind you're getting.

Every release is sold as a leap. A lot of them are speed and price leaps with a modest quality bump, and the marketing doesn't mention which kind you're getting.

I A/B'd two versions of the same model on real tasks. The newer one was quicker and cheaper, the answers marginally sharper. Worth the upgrade? For volume, yes. For a single hard problem, barely.

The hype trains us to chase the frontier when the last model was already good enough. Most work isn't bottlenecked by model quality; it's bottlenecked by how clearly we ask.

Watch the benchmark that matters to you, latency, cost per task, not the leaderboard headline. A faster model you'll actually use beats a smarter one you can't afford to run.

Don't upgrade on vibes. The drops are real, but they're often infrastructure, not intelligence. Cheaper and quicker is a win; just call it what it is.
