Why I Kept the Dumb Tool

I almost cancelled a 'dumb' tool, a plain text expander, and then realized it did one thing no AI did: it fired instantly, offline, with zero ambiguity. The AI version waited, thought, and sometimes got the shortcut wrong.

The lesson wasn't about that tool, it was about fit. The flashy model is wrong for the job that needs certainty and speed. A simple rule beats a smart system when the task is narrow and known.

I now match the tool to the risk: AI for the messy, ambiguous, 'figure it out' work; the dumb tool for the repetitive, exact, 'do it the same way' work. Mixing them up is how a typo becomes a five-minute argument with a chatbot.

Keep the simple tool. The AI is a better thinker, not a better typist, and the typist you can trust without watching is worth more than you'd think until it's gone.
