Descript vs Otter: Editing by Transcript Is Either Magic or a Trap

Both promise the same dream: forget waveforms, just delete the words. I ran twelve hours of interviews through both. The dream is real. So is the trap.

Otter is the fast one. Hit record, get a transcript, get searchable notes. For meetings and interviews where you mainly need 'what did they say about pricing,' it's the whole product. It does not want to be your editor.

Descript is the one where the transcript is the timeline. Cut a word, the audio cuts. Fix an 'um,' the voice overdubs itself. For a solo creator shipping a podcast, that's genuinely magic, until you overdub so much the guest sounds like a different person.

The trap with Descript is polish. It's tempting to fix every hesitation, and a too-clean interview sounds edited in the worst way, like a hostage reading a statement. Otter's rough transcript keeps the human mess, which is sometimes the point.

Use Otter when you need to find and quote. Use Descript when you're actually producing the thing. Confusing them, transcoding in Descript when you only needed search, is how a 20-minute task becomes a subscription you regret.
