Gemini vs Perplexity: I Stopped Picking and Started Routing

I used to have a default. Everyone does. For two months mine was Perplexity, then I'd flip to Gemini the second a task touched my actual files, then flip back. Treating this like a contest wasted more time than either tool ever saved.

Here's the split I landed on. Perplexity wins the moment I'm cold on something I don't understand yet. It drops the sources inline, and when a number matters, clicking the citation is the entire point. Gemini's answers are smoother and more confident, but confidence isn't a receipt.

Gemini's real edge is context it already holds. Ask it about a doc from last Tuesday or an email you half-wrote, and it isn't guessing, it's reading your life. Perplexity can connect accounts too, but it feels bolted on. Gemini feels native, because it is.

The failure modes are opposites. Perplexity can go thin, handing you three links and a shrug when you wanted synthesis. Gemini can return a confident paragraph that quietly invented a detail, and you only catch it because you already knew the answer.

So I quit the debate. Research I don't understand? Perplexity. Work that lives in my accounts? Gemini. The better model is just the one whose weakness isn't fatal for the specific job.
