Luma Made a Dream. Pictory Made a LinkedIn Post. Same Script, Different Use.

I fed the same one-line brief, 'a paper boat floating down a rainy city street at night,' to Luma and the same blog post to Pictory. The outputs weren't in the same universe, which is the point: they answer different requests despite both being 'AI video.'

Luma dreamt. It rendered a cinematic clip with reflections and slow motion that I'd happily use as a background. Pictory took my article, pulled key sentences, and dropped them over stock footage with captions, producing a shareable explainer in minutes. One is art, one is a content format.

For a product launch teaser, Luma's clip looked custom and cost me nothing but patience. For the 'here's what the post said' social cut, Pictory saved me from filming anything and matched the platform's captioned-video norm. Trying Luma for the recap would have meant generating pretty nothing; trying Pictory for the teaser would have meant a stock clip that screamed template.

The catch with Pictory is the footage isSomeone else's. If your brand needs original visuals, its library shows its age fast. Luma's catch is it won't summarize your blog; it'll invent a boat. Know which job you hired it for.

Verdict: Luma when you need a clip no one else has, Pictory when you need to repurpose text into video at scale. Same category label, opposite workflows.
