Runway Has More Knobs. Luma Has More Patience. My Video Habit Split in Two.

I graded the same prompt in both and the split was about control, not quality. Runway gave me a timeline, masks, and a dozen effects I could stack; Luma gave me a clean clip and a shrug. For a 30-second ad I cared about, Runway's knobs paid off. For a placeholder, Luma's calm was the feature.

Runway expects you to be a director. I spent an hour on one shot getting the camera move right, and it looked better than anything Luma handed me by default. But that hour is the price; if the video is a thumbnail loop for a landing page, the hour is theft.

Luma's patience shows when you iterate by description. 'Make the light warmer, slower, more fog' and it tries, without making you learn a node graph. Runway can do warmer-slower-foggier too, but you'll set it in three panels. The question is whether you enjoy the panels.

Reliability differed too. Runway's heavier models occasionally choked on a long prompt and I re-ran; Luma's simpler generations finished while I made coffee. For deadline video, finished beats fancy.

Verdict: Runway when the shot is the product and you'll tune it, Luma when the video is filler and you want it done. Most teams need both and use each maybe 40 percent of the time.
