La comparación honesta
Perplexity's whole deal is citation-backed answers. Ask 'what changed in the EU AI Act this month' and it hands you the primary links. Claude will answer too, but it's reasoning from training, and on fast-moving regulation that's a coin flip toward stale.
But Perplexity is weak at 'help me decide.' Give it a messy product decision and it summarizes both sides without committing. Claude will take a stance, weigh tradeoffs, and tell you why option B is a trap. That's judgment, not retrieval, and the two models are tuned for different halves of the job.
My actual routine: Perplexity first to gather what's true, Claude second to argue about what to do. When I skip Perplexity and just ask Claude, I catch myself trusting claims it can't source. When I skip Claude and only read Perplexity, I have facts and no decision.
Verdict: Perplexity for 'what is,' Claude for 'so what.' If you only pay for one, the answer depends on whether your bottleneck is information or indecision.
