I had a statistic I was sure was right because I had seen it twice in places that agreed. Perplexity showed me the original source said something narrower, and the version I remembered was a game of telephone. The habit that changed my writing was asking for the primary source, not just a confident answer.

The prompt that works is specific: find the original study or announcement behind this claim and quote the exact figure, then tell me if the common summary exaggerates. Perplexity will return links, and the links are the point. An answer without a source you can open is a rumor with better formatting.

I stopped asking it is this true, which invites a yes, and started asking where it comes from, which exposes the gap. Most of my wrong numbers were not lies, they were summaries that dropped the condition, last year's data presented as current, or a survey of five hundred people described as everyone.

It did not make me smarter, it made me slower in the right place. The three claims I had quietly fabricated for myself are gone from my drafts, and the ones left have a link I can defend.
