Chatbots
Janitor AI is a popular home for character-based chat and roleplay, with a huge community-made character library. Whether you want cleaner moderation, mobile apps or self-hosted freedom, several alternatives fit better.
The biggest character-chat community with polished iOS and Android apps and stable free access.
Ver Character.AI →Focused on long-term companionship with memory and personality growth rather than rotating characters.
Ver Replika →A mobile-first companion app with a large bot library and a swipe-style discovery feed.
Ver Chai →The power-user choice: a local front-end that connects to any model you choose, with total control over content and privacy.
Ver SillyTavern →A virtual AI friend with roleplay, games and a persistent relationship arc across chats.
Ver Anima →Build and train your own companions with fine-grained personality controls and community rooms.
Ver Kajiwoto →Common reasons to switch are outages and unstable free access, wanting official mobile apps, stricter or looser content moderation, or full control by running models locally.
Character.AI’s free tier is the most stable and polished. For unlimited free chat without accounts, self-hosting SillyTavern with a local model is the real answer.
Character.AI, Replika and Chai all have official iOS and Android apps; Janitor AI is browser-based.
Yes — SillyTavern paired with a local model (via Ollama or KoboldAI) gives you a fully private, offline character-chat setup.
