My Perplexity Research Workflow for Market Reports in Under an Hour

The exact Spaces, focus modes and follow-up pattern I use to go from a blank page to a sourced market brief with Perplexity — and the trap that silently ruins citations.

Perplexity replaced my boring-report stack: two browser tabs of search, six open PDFs and a notes file. What follows is the workflow I actually use, not the one from the ads.

First, I create a Space per project with custom instructions: 'You are a market analyst. Prefer 2026 sources. Flag any claim older than 18 months.' This one instruction cut my re-checking time roughly in half, because stale sources get marked instead of silently mixed in.

Second, I always run the first query in Academic focus when the report needs numbers — adoption rates, market size, churn benchmarks. Web focus gives me blog posts that cite other blog posts; Academic focus surfaces the papers and surveys underneath. Then I switch to Web focus for the 'so what' — pricing pages, launch announcements, competitor positioning.

The workflow that earns its keep is the follow-up ladder. I never ask 'give me a market report on X'. I ask: market size, then top five players with revenue, then pricing model per player, then complaints users have with each — one question per turn, each building on the last. Perplexity keeps thread context, so by turn five the answer reads like a chapter, not a list.

The trap: Perplexity's inline citations sometimes point to a page that no longer contains the claim. My rule is to click through every citation that supports a number I will print. I have caught two dead-end citations in the last month alone. Fifteen minutes of clicking beats one wrong number in front of a client.

Last step: export to the Pro pages feature, then hand-edit the summary myself. The generated brief is a scaffold — my value-add is deciding what the client actually needs to act on, which is still a human job.

Frequently asked questions:

Q: Does Perplexity hallucinate sources?

A: Less than raw chatbots because it retrieves first and answers second, but citation mismatch still happens. Treat citations as leads to verify, not proof.

Q: Is the Pro plan worth it for research?

A: For me, yes — the higher Pro Search limits and model choice matter on long threads. If you run fewer than a couple of research sessions a week, the free tier may be enough.

Q: Can it read PDFs I upload?

A: Yes, and that is underrated for competitor analysis. Upload their last two annual reports and ask for the deltas — it cross-references better than my usual skim does.
